Nina Watt
CCFC Volunteer
Abbotsford, British Columbia |
Nina Watt of Abbotsford, BC began experiencing IBD symptoms in 2003, around the time she and her husband were trying to get pregnant with their second child. She did her best to keep working as a medical imaging technologist and caring for her toddler, but was becoming run down from the chronic bleeding and diarrhea she experienced. She booked sick leave to rest while waiting to see a gastroenterologist, but following her last hospital shift – which she had to leave several times to use the washroom – she walked down the hall and checked into emergency. Within a few weeks she was diagnosed with severe ulcerative colitis, and was soon after hospitalized for two weeks with toxic megacolon. Her first night in hospital, the doctors told her family she may not make it through the night.
Fast forward many years, and Nina is still dealing with her disease on a daily basis. Her best health comes when she carefully manages her energy output, stress, diet, rest and adherence to medications. She has been an active and informed patient, researching and trying many things to improve her health and over the years.
Part of Nina’s recovery has included working with the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada as a volunteer for the past five years, undertaking various executive positions in her local chapter. |
